You CAN use oil pastels on canvas, in case you were wondering! :) I painted some 5 x 7 inch canvas boards with acrylic paint in blues, greens, and neutrals. they quickly dried, and I went straight in with my oil pastels. It is definitely different than working on paper due to the much more course texture of the canvas board, but still very enjoyable! I let the acrylic paint do the work for me for the background. Check out the video at the bottom of the post! I love the color palette ... View the Post
Faber-Castell Polychromos & VIDEO
I am a Prismacolor girl, but we were gifted these Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils that I wanted to try. They were really nice! Being oil-based, they did perform slightly differently than the wax-based Prismacolor colored pencils. I was also trying out some Soho paper (that did not go well), and then switched to my favorite Strathmore toned tan paper. Maybe the Soho sketchbook would be better with graphite? I'll have to try it. By the time I was done, I brought out my Derwent ... View the Post
Oil Pastels Florals on a Table & VIDEO
There is a little drama happening here! I wanted to try a perspective that has the flowers going off the page. I taped the sides of my Strathmore toned tan sketchbook with washi for a clean finish. My table is a little wonky, but hey, it's art! :) I used Mungyo Gallery and Artecho oil pastels (with a Paul Ruben or two). I love making my backgrounds creamy and blended so that the texture of the foreground can stand out a little more. I have a VIDEO at the bottom of the ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Lilies and VIDEO!
I was on a bit of a "lily kick" a few months ago. :) Here are two different oil pastel paintings, one of which is a video at the bottom of the post. These were fun to paint, and as you can see from the different color palettes, very versatile. Try these out in your sketchbook! I love painting on toned paper, as it sets of the opaque oil pastels beautifully! Using colored pencils is a great choice for finer details Taping off the edges with washi gives a nice, clean finish. I hope you ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Framed Florals!
I saw the most beautiful framed florals in an art magazine, which inspired this much more simple version in my toned tan Strathmore sketchbook. I used my oil pastels and Prismacolor colored pencils for a great mixed media duo! :) Using toned paper can be a great help with the dreaded white page brain blank. The toned tan is my favorite, as it sets off colors in the best way. Do you love working on toned paper? Using Sennelier's gold oil pastel for finishing touches and highlights is a ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Book Illustration in Strathmore Art Journal
I am often tossing children's book ideas around in my head, so I thought I would practice an illustration in my Strathmore toned tan sketchbook. This little house was a quick painting session, but a reminder that we can have a little fun instead of everything needing to be a big masterpiece. The proportions are a little off, but it ended up being a fun scene. I mostly used Artecho oil pastels, which are affordable and have a great range of color choices. As a kid (and admittedly ...
