Jane Davenport Watercolor Abstracts in the Sketchbook

I pulled out my old friend, the Jane Davenport watercolor palette. I love the bold colors that inspire me to create. Dealing with (what is probably) Long Covid, sometimes the energy level is very near zero. Painting abstracts saves the day, as it allows me to still be creative and play with my supplies. Anyways, these backgrounds can always be continued later, or used as digital watercolor backgrounds. Doing creative things is always profitable, even if they are simple. I'm using one of my ... Beginner Oil Pastel Flowers on Navy & VIDEO

This easy, beginner flower painting is a fun one to dip your toes in if you are nervous about trying oil pastels. :) I mostly used Mungyo Gallery and Paul Rubens Haiya oil pastels. They have a ton of colors and are at a great price point. I have used Canson Graduate toned mixed media paper, but you can easily do this in your sketchbook. I taped the sides with washi, so that there would be a clean edge. I don't often paint very dark backgrounds, but there is something cheerful about coral and ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Lilies Painting!

If you need a bit of cheering up, paint these flowers! I mostly used my Mungyo Gallery and Paul Rubens oil pastels on Canson Graduate toned paper. It looks a bit on the messy side, but I like the wildflower look that it conveys. There is something amazing about nature just doing what it is supposed to be doing. :) I also love a bright yellow. It just brightens the whole painting and lifts it. Sometimes, it is difficult to find bright yellows that are also opaque. That is the beauty of oil ... View the Post

Journal Fodder with Kuretake Paints

If you love to art journal (or junk journal), it is fun to make your own bits and bobs. I used a waterproof pen to draw and watercolors to loosely give color. You can draw anything, but I always tend toward botanicals. :) Roughly cut out the shapes and use them. If you don't want stark white edges, watercolor or tea stain your paper first, let it dry, then proceed. It's your journal! I have a JPG download below. Just right click and save the picture, print it out, then fussy cut the shapes. ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Painting of Journal Cover

Sometimes, I like to do little painting exercises from things that I see in my favorite Somerset Studio magazine. The amazing photos are so inspiring! I saw a junk journal with a seam binding bow, and I had to try painting it. I grabbed my Canson Graduate toned gray paper and my Paul Rubens oil pastels. It did not turn out quite as "3D" as I would have hoped, but I had a lot of fun painting it. I used my Prismacolor colored pencils to scratch in some writing. Fun! :) ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Chubby Bird Painting & VIDEO

Oil Pastels are the best when you want textured bird feathers and complex layering of color! I have a VIDEO at the bottom of the post, so please check that out. :) I used toned paper from Canson. Blick always has great deals on their pads in cream, gray, and black. The paper is perfect for oil pastels, colored pencils, and gouache. I love using it. I also used touches of Sennelier silver for a lovely sparkle! I tend to paint a creamier background with the foreground being more textured. Oil ... View the Post
