We are exiting out of Autumn rather quickly, as we had a high of 16 degrees Fahrenheit today (at least the day that I am editing this). :) Yikes! Here are some oil pastel scarecrows to remind us of that cozy Fall in the not-too-distant past. I wish his face wasn't so yellow, but alas, it happened. Hopefully, he isn't too creepy. Here is a seamless pattern design using the "not creepy" scarecrow. :) You can find him in fabric and wallpaper at Spoonflower! ... View the Post
Simply Paint Birds Watercolor Painting & Video
This bird was so much fun to paint! I was following on of the birds in Tom Shepherd's book Simply Paint Birds. It comes with a dot card of Daniel Smith watercolors, so I tried to just use those for the most part. I recommend the book if you love birds. It is a great read and has inspiring tutorials. Check out the video below! ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Christmas Candle Painting & VIDEO
Another Christmas is approaching. I'm so glad that the Savior, Jesus, came to die for us all! He is the light of the world, and this dark world really does need light. Here is an oil pastel painting of a candle. I first drew the underpainting with colored pencils to save layers. Creamy pastels can be harder to layer, so creating an underpainting not only saves the pastels, but also helps block in the colors and provide some shading. I created this surface pattern design, which is ... View the Post
Sennelier Iridescent Set of Oil Pastels
These are a great gift idea for the artist in your life! Sennelier Iridescent oil pastels are BEAUTIFUL! They also include a white and a black, which is always needed. The silver might just be my favorite. The flecks of shimmery goodness add a perfect finishing touch to your paintings. You could make the whole painting shimmery—I won't judge! Below, I've shown the colors on a piece of Strathmore toned tan paper, and there is a short VIDEO below! Look at those beauties in the box!! ... View the Post
Heat Embossing & Colored Pencils on Black Paper
Drama alert! :) If you want some luxury-looking cards, try out this technique! I used Arteza black drawing paper (or use cardstock), Ranger Ink embossing powder (it's my favorite), and colored pencils. It's easy and delivers impactful results. Colored pencils were my first art supply love when I was young. They are so versatile! Don't be afraid to layer multiple colors for shading! Here is another easy way to use your embossing powders! Use clear embossing ink through a ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Paintings!
I can't stay away from my colored pencils and oil pastels! :) They combine the perfect vibrance of color with creamy texture. I love other media like gouache, acrylics, and watercolors, but I keep coming back to my colored pencils and oil pastels. Using colored pencils for the underpainting works well on paper that can't handle watercolor, like Strathmore's toned papers in grey and tan. In the first picture, I've even used Arteza's black drawing paper for a dramatic contrast to the opaque ... View the Post
