I can’t stay away from my colored pencils and oil pastels! š They combine the perfect vibrance of color with creamy texture. I love other media like gouache, acrylics, and watercolors, but I keep coming back to my colored pencils and oil pastels.
Using colored pencils for the underpainting works well on paper that can’t handle watercolor, like Strathmore’s toned papers in grey and tan. In the first picture, I’ve even used Arteza’s black drawing paper for a dramatic contrast to the opaque oil pastels. Fun!

I love this colorful, light hummingbird! I used a silver iridescent from Sennelier for shimmery accents.
This bird was a lot of fun because of the bold colors and shape!
