Have you tried painting with tinted charcoal? This twelve pan set from Derwent is perfect for your art journals and sketchbook line and wash paintings! Painted Frog in Calligraphy Inks & Tutorial VIDEO
I have been painting frogs in the last month. I'm not sure why, except maybe that the simple shape of a frog lends itself to creative potential. Here is a very simple painting where the attention is more on the beautiful calligraphy in from J. Herbin and Gold Winsor & Newton metallic goodness! I created a seamless pattern design (and collection coming in the future) from this little guy and entered him into Spoonflower's Leap Year Frog challenge. The link to vote is ... View the Post
HIMI Gouache Paintings & VIDEO
Gouache is such a great medium. It takes the best of watercolor with the best of acrylic and then adds a lovely matte finish! There are expensive gouaches, but for the digital work that I do, I enjoy using the HIMI gouache sets. Below, are pictures of several mini paintings. I have used most of them in pattern designs already! The rich colors and layering capability makes gouache a great choice if you want bolder color and texture. Video at the bottom of the post! The gingerbread ... View the Post
Koi Watercolor in Art Journal & Video
I pulled out my Koi Watercolor travel palette for a quick painting in my Strathmore art journal. It's a great set of colors to take on the go, as well as for mixing fun new colors. Here is a collage of wintery flowers in bright, happy colors. I have a tutorial video below, as well as pictures of some of the pattern designs I created from this painting. ... View the Post
Metallic Shimmer Watercolor Centaur & Video
I love black watercolor paper! The dramatic, black backdrop for metallic watercolors is perfect for my mythological centaur. :) Check out the video below for the tutorial! Mr. Centaur is walking in the wildflowers! I used Artsy metallic watercolors, which I think is a great choice comparable to the Paul Rubens set, but at a better price. If you always paint in shimmery goodness, then the Paul Ruben palette may be a great investment, but I usually use them as a highlight on my paintings. ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Purple Balloon Painting
Oil pastels! You know that I love them! :) Here is a hot air balloon done on Strathmore's Toned Tan paper. I also used colored pencils to define the finer lines in the basket area. Colored pencils work wonderfully with oil pastels! I have always loved hot air balloons! When I was a kid, a hot air balloon landed in a neighbor's field. We all ran back there to see the deflating, brightly colored balloon. It was so exciting! They are a taste of history and are the perfect canvas for color ... View the Post
